CT Weather: Heavy Snow Forecast, Hazardous Outlook Issued

The National Weather Service is eyeing a "significant" winter storm.

CONNECTICUT — A major snowstorm remains possible for Connecticut late Wednesday into Thursday but there may also be minor snow accumulation on Monday too.

Local meteorologist say Connecticut can expect to see between a coating to two inches of snow accumulation on Monday, though the immediate coast may see mainly plain rain. The snow and rain is forecast to begin after the commute to work Monday morning and end early Monday evening.

Concerning the potential powerful midweek snowstorm, the National Weather Service said in a Sunday evening update that "There is potential for a significant coastal storm Wednesday into Wednesday Night bringing heavy snow and/or rain, strong winds, and coastal flood impacts."

The weather service as of late Sunday was still not making any predictions yet on potential snow accumulation for the midweek storm but local meteorologists are weighing in.

NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Josh Cingranelli said it's still unclear how much snow Connecticut may see from the midweek storm. Different computer models reveals varying outcomes.

CONNECTICUT — All eyes turn toward the middle of next week as Connecticut could be looking at a significant winter storm. The National Weather Service has already issued a hazardous weather outlook for the entire state in anticipation of a potential major winter storm.

Because the storm is five days out, and the track remains uncertain it's hard to pinpoint what the exact impacts may be, but accumulating snow is a possibility, according to the weather service.

There may even be a very light snow accumulation on Monday too in parts of the state.

Here are the latest updates for southern Connecticut via the weather service:

"There is potential for a significant coastal storm Wednesday into Wednesday Night bringing heavy snow and/or rain, strong winds, and coastal flood impacts."

In a detailed discussion, the weather service said, there is "good model agreement on a southern low developing Tue/Tue Night, intensifying as it tracks NE up the Mid Atlantic coast Wednesday towards the area. There is good model agreement and consistency on development of a coastal low, with strong dynamics and a Gulf/Atlantic moisture feed, approaching the area on Wed...but ultimately storm track will determine if we are looking at a heavy snow event for the entire area, heavy snow for coastal plain and light snow event interior, or a heavy interior snow with snow to rain coast."

"Overall, confidence is moderate in a coastal low affecting the region during the Wed/Wed Night time period with moderate to heavy precip, gusty to strong winds, and at least minor coastal
impacts. 12z ECE and GEFS ensemble means and operational runs currently signal potential for a significant snowfall for much of the region. Confidence is inherently low this far out, but should see increasing confidence and clarity on details as the responsible shortwave energy works onshore Sunday into Sunday Night," according to the weather service.

Here are the latest updates for northern Connecticut via the weather service:

"Some accumulating snow is possible Monday. More significant snowfall is possible late Wednesday into Thursday."

"At the moment, the ensemble qpf probs would favor heaviest snow across CT/RI and southeast MA. Unfortunately these finer details won`t be resolved until probably sometime Mon or Tue, when models converge on the magnitude and placement of these features. Nonetheless, southern
stream moisture and abundant cold air are in play for potential significant snowfall (6+ inches), although northward extent of heavy snow threat is highly uncertain at this time range."

Weekend forecast for CT and beyond

Some rain is forecast on Saturday with fog. Sunday looks amazing with plenty of sunshine and temps into the mid 50s. On Monday, there is a chance of some rain and snow and the possibility of minor snow accumulation away from the I-95 corridor.

Tuesday looks cold and sunny, and then we wait to see what happens on Wednesday. If it snows, it's forecast to begin in the afternoon on Wednesday.

Have a great and safe weekend!
