CT Weather: Ice, Rain Forecast For New Year's Day

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for four counties in Connecticut due to icing concerns.

CONNECTICUT — There is growing confidence that New Year's Day may feature some ice for Connecticut as a storm is expected to bring precipitation Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.

A hazardous weather outlook was issued for Hartford, Tolland, Windham and Litchfield counties for the icing potential. No advisories have been issued yet for southern Connecticut, but the National Weather Service said inland sections may also see some ice at the beginning of the storm. It's expected that the Interstate 95 corridor will see mostly rain, though some brief icing is possible there.

There is also a chance for some snow Sunday.

Here are the current updates from the National Weather Service:

Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties: "A wintry mix is expected Friday night, mainly northwest of the Boston to Providence corridor and particularly in the higher terrain of Massachusetts. A brief period of snow is possible, but the main concern is for freezing rain and sleet before precipitation changes mainly to rain by daybreak Saturday. While icing amounts will be on the light side, it only takes a small amount to result in hazardous travel."

Litchfield County: "A storm system will bring a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain to the region for late Friday through Saturday morning. A light accumulation of snow and ice is possible for much of the area."

Southern Connecticut: The weather service said that with cold air in place Friday, "some sleet is possible at the onset with the likelihood of some interior locations receiving some freezing rain.

"For coastal locations, plain rain is expected with the potential for some sleet at the onset. Little to no sleet accumulation is forecast, but there is potential for a glaze of freezing rain across the interior if the colder temperatures hang on. The latest forecast has all locations as plain rain late Friday evening and continuing into early Saturday morning."

WTNH News 8 chief meteorologist Gil Simmons said some light rain may develop late Wednesday night and move out by 9 a.m. Thursday. He predicted an icy mix Friday night through Saturday morning that will turn to rain. Another mix of precipitation Sunday into Monday could feature wet snow, he said.
