Severe CT Weather Forecast For Christmas Eve, Day

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook in anticipation of wild weather on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

CONNECTICUT — Forecasters have growing confidence that Connecticut will see some wild weather on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. There won't be snow; instead, heavy rain and strong wind gusts are expected.

Dense fog and flooding are also likely due to the snowpack on the ground. Temperatures will soar into the mid-50s Christmas Eve as the rain moves in.

First things first. Dense fog is expected early Monday morning and there may be a period of light snow Monday night.

For southern Connecticut, Christmas Eve will start off dry and fog will roll in due to the melting snow, the weather service said. Heavy rain and strong wind gusts are then expected to move in. Wind gusts of 40-50 mph are possible. Up to 2 inches of rain is forecast Thursday and Friday.

Thunderstorms are possible Christmas Day. The precipitation may turn to light snow late Friday night as temperatures drop rapidly.

WTNH News 8 chief meteorologist Gil Simmons said, "Welcome to Winter! Watch your step and driving early (Monday) as there are quite a few icy spots! Some melting this afternoon with temperatures in the 30s to about 40 along with lots of clouds and some sunny breaks. A spotty rain or snow shower possible tonight and then more sun tomorrow afternoon! Wednesday looks nice with 40s! A severe wind storm expected late on Christmas Eve with heavy rain that will clear for Christmas Day. Merry Christmas!"

NBC Connecticut chief meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan and Fox 61 meteorologist Sam Sampieri detail the chance for severe weather.
