CT Weather: Significant Ice Storm Leads To Watches, Advisories

The National Weather Service issued winter storm watches and advisories in advance of a prolonged ice storm for CT. Here's what to expect.

CONNECTICUT — The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for southern Connecticut and a winter storm watch for Hartford, Tolland, Windham and Litchfield counties.

A prolonged ice storm is forecast that will begin Monday morning and could continue until Tuesday afternoon. The precipitation will be light for most of Monday and the ice is expected to be at its worst Monday night and into early Tuesday.

Temperatures will moderate on Tuesday and the frozen precipitation will end as plain rain across most of Connecticut.

The I-95 corridor of both Fairfield and New Haven counties and interior sections of Middlesex County:

A winter weather advisory has been issued beginning 7 a.m. Monday and ending 7 a.m. Tuesday. Freezing rain expected. Total ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch.

"Pockets of light freezing rain or freezing drizzle will produce a light glaze at times on Monday," the weather service said. "A steadier period of freezing rain can be expected Monday night before changing to rain."

Tonight: A chance of freezing rain and sleet, mainly after 4am. Cloudy, with a low around 29. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Calm wind becoming north 5 to 8 mph in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Washington's Birthday: Freezing rain and sleet likely, becoming all freezing rain after 7am. Cloudy, with a high near 32. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. North wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. Little or no sleet accumulation expected.

Tuesday: Rain, mainly before 2pm. High near 39. Wind chill values between 25 and 35. Northeast wind 7 to 14 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.


Inland sections of Fairfield and New Haven counties:

A winter weather advisory is in effect from 7 a.m. Monday until 10 a.m. Tuesday. Freezing rain expected. Total ice accumulations of up to one quarter of an inch.

"Pockets of light freezing rain or freezing drizzle will produce a light glaze at times on Monday," the weather service said. "A steadier period of freezing rain can be expected Monday night before changing to rain."

Hartford, Tolland and Windham County:

A winter storm watch is in effect from Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening. Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Total snow accumulations of up to three inches and ice accumulations of up to half an inch possible.

"Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice," the weather service said. "Travel could be extremely difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute."

Monday Night: A chance of freezing rain and sleet before 1am, then freezing rain. Low around 30. Calm wind becoming northeast around 5 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no sleet accumulation expected.

Litchfield County:

A winter storm watch is in effect from Monday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon. Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Total snow accumulations of up to 3 inches and ice accumulations between one tenth and one third of an inch possible.
