Savers and Big Brothers of SW CT team up for America Recycles Day

Do you recycle bottles and cans? …Sure!

How about paper and cardboard? …Yep.

Your clothing!? …What?

26 billion pounds of clothing and textiles go into landfills each year yet 95% of it can be reused or recycled. Big Brothers Big Sisters SWCT Foundation and Savers Stores are teaming up to promote America Recycles Month -- specifically the recycling of clothing -- throughout November!!

“Our two organizations allow consumers to donate and recycle their gently-used clothing in order to be more environmentally-friendly and help Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Connecticut serve more children facing challenges in their lives,” said Thomas Holden, director of the Foundation located in Ansonia. “We host donation sites in Ansonia, Newtown, North Haven and Norwalk. Donors can also drop off clothing to their nearest Savers Store in Orange, Brookfield, Meriden or Bristol.”

Each location is getting the word out as this Keep America Beautiful Initiative takes hold throughout the country. Visit https://americarecyclesday.org/ to check out the national movement centering on November 17, America Recycles Day.

The clothing collected at donations sites is resold in stores and the proceeds benefit the nonprofit BBBS agency located in Bridgeport but serving children in 40 towns in the state. The Foundation also provides at-home pickups for those who cannot get to a donation site.

“We decided to extend the effort throughout the month so that everyone could take our pledge to make an impact,” said Liz Milazzo Community Donation Manager Savers of Brookfield and Phil Guerette, store manager of Savers in Orange. Here is the pledge that donors are asked to make:

LEARN: 26 billion pounds of clothing and textiles go into landfills each year, yet 95% could be reused or recycled.

ACT: Within the next month, I will recycle more clothing and bring it to a donation site.

SHARE: In the next month, I will encourage family and friends to recycle their clothing.

Donors are encouraged to sign the pledge, return it to one of the donation sites and be part of this growing movement to raise awareness about recycling clothing.
