Berlin Babe Ruth Team Improves to 5-7 On The Season

Team has three games this week before the playoffs.

By Rick Volk

A five-run Berlin outburst in the third inning gave winning pitcher Mike Veronesi all the runs he needed to defeat Herb's Sports of West Hartford in Farmington Bank/Vantis Life summer baseball action Sunday. The 7-3 victory at Percival Field moved Berlin's record to 5-7 on the year with one week of play remaining before the league playoffs.

Veronesi, who scattered eight hits, threw Berlin's first complete game of the season. The right-hander got stronger in the heat as the game wore on, facing only the minimum of nine batters over the last three innings. Catcher Scott McLeod's perfect throw to retire a would-be base stealer and Veronesi's grab of a liner up in the middle in the seventh were among the Berlin defensive highlights.

Dave Bordinaro and Ryan Lea reached base in the decisive 3rd inning to set the table for Veronesi's 2-RBI double. Dan Dunham and Kyle Russell added RBI hits in front of a two-run single by Dan McLeod.

Berlin will play three games next week, facing Rocky Hill, Hartford and New Britain teams.
