Berlin High Sports Roundup: Girl's Golf Team Upset By Farmington By A Stroke

Boy's Tennis team uses improvised line-up to win second match of the year.

Girl's Golf

Farmington 169, Berlin 170

The Berlin Girls Golf Team suffered their first setback of the season Monday, a demoralizing one stroke loss to Farmington at Tunxis Plantation, 169 to 170.

Led by medalist Haley Campbell, with a fine round of 39, Farmington's 169 total was their best team score of the year. The victory now gives Farmington the inside track to capture the CCC West Conference title. They are undefeated for the season at 6-0, Berlin is now 9-1.

Berlin's team scoring was led by Julia Kemmling with a 40, Emily Deutsch with a 42, Ashley D'Attilio 43 and Abbie Underwood with a 45.  Berlin is in action next at Glastonbury on Tuesday.

"This loss to Farmington is going to be very tough for us to swallow," Berlin coach Jim Barnes said. "Beating Farmington would have pretty much assured us the CCC West title. Now we are on the outside looking in. I've always told the girls you learn more about yourself and your game when you face adversity. Well today we faced adversity in a big way.

"To shoot 170 is a good team score but it wasn't good enough. I know these girls pretty well and I'm confident this loss will push us to work harder, play better and reach our full potential. We have a lot of golf left to play. Hats off to Farmington. They did a great job today."

Boy's Tennis

Berlin 4, Bristol Eastern 3

The Berlin Redcoats, 2-9, increased its record in the CCC South to 2-1 with a hard fought 4-3 win over senior-dominated perennial CCC South Champion, Bristol Eastern.

It was a nice team win in that #3 singles player Mike Gurrieri was not available, nor was half of the #2 doubles, Reid Hilbie. The other half of #2 doubles Kris Langevin accepted the challenge to play #3 singles and was very competitive.

Berlin was led by singles victories by Dan Rombola (now 8-2 at #1) and Peter Hogan (#2) and a dominating win at #1 doubles for Jack Stafstrom and Captain Jaydip Patel.

It came down to #3 doubles and Rich Schlichting and Zach Mayer fresh off their 3-hour marathon match at RHAM were up to the task winning in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.

The team next plays host to Platt on Wednesday.
