Berlin Obituary: Rita Grygus, 84

Condolences to her family and friends.

Rita E. Grygus, 84, of New Britain, passed away on Monday, April 2, 2018. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Estelle (Sheffield) Grygus.

Born in New Britain, she lived in New Britain all her life, spending her summers in Old Lyme. Rita was a member of St. Paul's Church, Kensington. She graduated from New Britain High School, then received her BSN from Boston College and her MSN from the University of Pennsylvania.

She went on to become the Director of the Meriden Wallingford School of Nursing. Upon the school closing, she became the Hospital's Director of Nursing Services. Later, she became the Supervising Nurse Consultant for the State of CT Dept. of Public Health for 16 years prior to her retirement in 1999 and was a member of the New Britain Board of Health.

Rita was also very involved with the Hospital for Special Care, serving on the Board of Directors, Institutional Review Board, Continuing Medical Education Committee and was a Co-founder of the Joy of Art program and a Board Member.

She was a docent for the New Britain Museum of American Art and a volunteer for the CT Race in the Park in New Britain. Lastly, she was a Grants' Committee Member of the CT Breast Health Initiative.

Rita leaves an aunt, two Godchildren, many cousins, extended family, and close friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, April 10th, from 8:30 to 9:30 at the Burritt Hill Funeral Home, 332 Burritt St., New Britain, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Church, Kensington. She will be laid to rest following the Mass in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospital for Special Care Foundation, Pediatric Unit, 2150 Corbin Ave, New Britain, CT 06053.
