Former New Britain Mayor to Head New Britain-Berlin Chamber of Commerce

Timothy Stewart will take over the role of president, a position left vacant when health concerns forced former chamber president William Millerick to retire in July.

Former New Britain Mayor Timothy Stewart is stepping back into the public eye, but this time it’s not in the political realm.

Tim Stewart on Thursday was named the successor to William Millerick, taking over duties as the next president of the Greater New Britain-Berlin Chamber of Commerce. Stewart, 52, is expected to begin before the new year.

Stewart, a lifelong New Britain resident, served four terms as mayor of New Britain before Tim O’Brien was elected in 2011. He was selected as chamber president from a long list of applicants that included more than 40 candidates.

John Miller, chairman of the chamber’s board of directors, said Stewart’s understanding of the area and experience in both government and business made him the ideal candidate. While overseeing the city as mayor, Stewart was responsible for supervising operations that included a $200 million budget, labor relations, economic development and more.

The position was advertised with a salary of $60,000 annually. Officials did not comment on what his salary would be.

Stewart could not immediately be reached for comment.

The lifelong New Britain resident replaces Millerick, who left the chamber in July after a series of personal health struggles. Millerick had served as president for more than a decade.
