New Britain Man Charged With Stealing Tires From Postal Service

A New Britain man has been charged with stealing 43 tires from a U.S. Postal Service facility, according to federal prosecutors.

NEW BRITAIN, CT — A New Britain man has been charged in connection with stealing 43 tires from a U.S. Postal Service maintenance facility in Hartford, according to a statement from Leonard C Boyle, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, and Joseph W. Cronin, Inspector in Charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s Boston Division.

Steven Knox, 45, was charged with theft of government property. He was released on $100,000 bond.

According to prosecutors, in the early morning hours of May 19, the tire shed at a U.S. Postal Service vehicle maintenance facility in Hartford was burglarized and 43 tires were stolen. The facility’s surveillance video showed a pickup truck pulling up to the tire shed at about 1:30 a.m.

Knox and another individual then broke into the shed, loaded tires into the bed of pickup, and then drove off. Knox was formerly employed by a USPS towing contractor and possessed a key card to access the vehicle maintenance facility’s gate, prosecutors said.

Knox faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years.
