Top 10 Berlin Patch Stories Of The Year

Berlin Patch is celebrating the beginning of its third year in town after beginning Dec. 5, 2010.

In these final days on 2012, Berlin Patch will count down the top 10 stories of the year. The top stories were calculated by the amount of page views they received from you the viewers.

Here are numbers five and six.

Number Six: BHS Students Hold Sit-In To Protest Popular Teacher's Contract Not Being Renewed.

A large group of Berlin High School students staged a sit-in at the auditorium to protest the non-renewal of popular teacher Deb Cassidy in February.

More than 100 students attended the protest at times during the school day.

Cassidy, a World Language Arts teacher, was not the only teacher whose contract was not renewed but the only one the students rallied for.

Number Five: Kohl's Coming To Berlin

It was a big deal for consumers and a big deal for the town's Economic Development Dept. to bring in a big box store like Kohl's to replace Sam's Club next to Home Depot in the Brickyard Plaza.

Cedar Brickyard LLC obtained site plan approval for the project from the Berlin Planning and Zoning Commission in April of 2011.

A demolition permit was issued by the Town in July of 2011 and the contractor removed the former building façade. When the project was complete Brickyard Plaza Shopping Center had over 279,000 square feet of space.

So you think Berlin residents were excited to have the store in town? The story ended up with the fifth most page views of any in 2012.
