Canton Area Dentist Participates in Halloween Candy Buy Back

Don't want all that candy lingering in the house after Halloween? Trade your stash for cash!

Celebrating Halloween with a child who has diabetes can be miserable. Just ask single mom Danielle Silk.

Danielle’s son Andrew was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes less than 1 month after his 4th birthday. Like many parents struggling with the a new, life-changing diagnosis, Type 1 Diabetes can be overwhelming at first. Suddenly the parent must learn how to give injections, count carbohydrates and monitor blood sugar.

Not only that, but they can’t have any of the Halloween candy!

Silk recently posted this on her Facebook page:

“Andrew was talking about dressing up for Halloween this year and I told him that I don’t think we are going to go out this year because he can’t have the candy; even though he barely ever had candy before his diagnosis with Diabetes. He proceeds to tell me, “I know. It’s okay mommy. You can have my candy because I know you like candy.” Hopefully we stumble across people with chips, goldfish, pretzels, etc. again this year. #StupidDiabetes.”

Parents of children with diabetic children will be happy to know that a local dentist is participating in a Candy Buy Back program.

Dentist Mitchell S. Katz’s office is collecting Halloween candy for troops overseas. Children (diabetic or non diabetic) will receive $2 for every pound of candy given, up to 5 lbs. The buyback will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 111 Simsbury Rd., Avon, Conn.

The donated candy will benefit Operation Gratitude and will be sent to troops serving overseas.
