Gladys Backes, 93, widow of Joseph Backes, her loving husband of over 70 years, died peacefully at St. Francis Hospital on Tuesday, March 13, 2018.
Born September 3, 1924 in Burlington, she was the daughter of the late William Scheidel and Mary Feyk Scheidel. She lived in Burlington most of her life, until moving to Canton a year ago. She enjoyed the back deck in the summer and the front porch to keep her “eye” on things.
She was an avid Red Sox and UConn fan. Monday mornings for years you would find her at St. Stanislaus Church where she would help count the offerings from the weekend. Bingo, knitting, Burlington Seniors were where she enjoyed spending time, but mostly her weekly hair appointments with Maryann and catching up on the “gossip.”

She was a long time communicant of St. Stans and the Golden Agers as well. As of late, her new fun was going to Foxwoods on Saturday afternoons with Marty & Kathy. She also enjoyed talking to Kelley about her day with the boys that she nanny’s for and hearing about Jen’s day with her customers and new styles.
Gladys leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
