Cat Dies, Tenants Displaced In Canton Fire

A fire over the weekend has damaged a local three-family home.

CANTON, CT — Tenants have been displaced and at least one cat died in a fire at a three-family residence Saturday evening. Canton Volunteer Fire & EMS responded to the call at 6:41 p.m. for a fire on the first floor of 81 Dunne Ave.

All residents had already safely evacuated, but some were forced to leave family pets behind.

Upon arrival, the department found smoke pushing out from the back and side of the building. The fire was quickly extinguished, preventing further extension within the structure and to nearby homes.

Firefighters remained on the scene, to overhaul the damaged residences, until about 9:30 p.m., according to a statement from the department.

There was smoke, electrical and structural damage throughout the three-family home. It has been assessed to be uninhabitable, forcing all residents to be displaced.

One pet cat perished at the scene and another is missing.

The road was closed down for three hours.

Canton received mutual aid Avon Volunteer Fire Department, Burlington Volunteer Fire Department, New Hartford Fire Department and Simsbury Volunteer Fire Department.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Canton’s Fire Marshal.
