Dr. Christopher Bonelli Settles In at the Family Business

Dr. Charles Bonelli has provided eye care in Canton for 40 years.

During his four decades in eye care, Dr. Charles Bonelli has witnessed immense changes in Canton and his business.

Since the early 1970s when Dr. Charles Bonelli came to town, Route 44 has expanded beyond two lanes, technology has grown leaps and bounds and many more people now understand that optometrists do much more than prescribe eyewear.

Recently another change was evident in Bonelli's business — the addition of his son Christopher, who came on board over the summer.

Christopher, who has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Connecticut and a doctorate in Optometry from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, said he is grateful to join the family business and get a much more rounded experience than so many of his peers.

"It's a great, great opportunity," he said.

The elder Bonelli brought his business to Canton in 1973 and moved to Canton Village approximately two years later. While the town has changed a lot, he still loves doing business here.

"It's a nice small town," he said. "I've gotten to know so many people. Now I see their kids and grandchildren."

Even so, patients now have the opportunity to see either doctor, allowing the business to better serve clients. The business name has also evolved to Bonelli Eyecare.

Optometry is an ever-evolving field and for many, they now serve as primary eye care physicians, diagnosing a wide range of vision-related issues.

"We play an important role now in the health care field," Charles Bonelli said.

Charles Bonelli has no immediate plans to retire but said the change will allow him to slow down a little and enjoy activities such as gardening, skiing and fishing.

Christopher Bonelli is also excited to be in the area and also enjoys outdoor pursuits.

"I plan to stay in the area," he said.
