The Highly Sensitive Person, with Therapist Maura Harris, at Canton Public Library

Therapist offers free informational seminar to identify general symptoms and describe therapeutic coping strategies for children and adults.

A special presentation and discussion comes to Canton Public Library on Tuesday, September 19, at 6:30 p.m., in which Maura Harris, MS, will explore the topic “The Highly Sensitive Person.” This program is for those with social, emotional, and educational challenges resulting from heightened sensitivities, or for parents of similarly sensitive children. Do bright lights, loud sounds, strong smells sometimes overwhelm you? During busy days, do you wish you could get away to a darkened room or some other private place? Were you known as sensitive or shy as a child? Do you get rattled when under pressure to perform? Do you avoid violent movies and TV, and deliberately avoid overwhelming situations? The trait, also known as Sensory Processing Sensitivity, is normal and is experienced by 15-20 percent of people.

Ms. Harris bases her approach partly on the methodologies described in Elaine Aron’s book, The Highly Sensitive Person. An educational strategist and therapist, Maura Harris runs a professional practice which helps people create coping strategies to accomplish their goals. A question and answer session and discussion follows.

The program is free, although registration is requested to allow for seating setup. Canton Public Library is located at 40 Dyer Avenue in Canton. For more information, please check the website at www.cantonpubliclibrary.org, call (860) 693-5800, or email kbunn@cantonpubliclibrary.org.
