Mike Shalin Discusses 40 Years of the Red Sox at Canton Library

Noted sports journalist Mike Shalin discusses baseball, The Red Sox, Yankees and more

Mark the date: the day before World Series Game 1 is Monday, October 22, when Canton Library brings in noted sports journalist Mike Shalin for a discussion about baseball. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. in the adjacent Community Center. Mr. Shalin, who briefly wrote for the New York Post on baseball (about that OTHER team), and then spent 22 years covering sports at the Boston Herald, has the inside scoop on all things Red Sox. He’s also knowledgeable about New York teams. Using his new book filled with Red Sox photographs and interviews, Mr. Shalin opens the discussion with stories about star and support players, the grounds crew, Red Sox staff, alumni, and some opposing team players. He’s interested in audience follow-up questions and in sharing his enthusiasm about sports.

In addition to his latest book, The Hometown Team: Four Decades of Boston Red Sox Photography, which features the photographs of Steve Babineau, Mr. Shalin has written numerous books including a biography of Don Mattingly. Baseball analyst and Hall-of Fame pitcher, Dennis Eckersley, who penned the foreword to The Hometown Team, has known Mr. Shalin since Eckersley’s first stint with the Sox from ’78-‘84. With his journalist credentials, Mr. Shalin has been a Hall-of-Fame voter since 1989 and still works at Fenway as an official scorer. This speaker knows his baseball history.

Get yourself ready for the Series with a free night of baseball talk. Copies of Mr. Shalin’s scrapbook-formatted new book will be available to let us flip through the comprehensive photographs and to purchase. Registration is requested for seating set-up. Canton Public Library is located at 40 Dyer Avenue in Canton. For more information please call (860) 693-5800, email kbunn@cantonpubliclibrary.org, or visit www.cantonpubliclibrary.org.
