"I felt I was transported to a Green Kingdom, that's all I can say," said one senior citizen during her first visit to Griffin Garden Market, located on Route 1 near the Madison town line.

Once an owner of a thriving antique business, Hawthorne decided she wanted to showcase fresh, seasonal, classic and unusual items in her multi room house. One wall is covered with large jars of dried herbs and spices, sold in any quantity. Kettle corn, maple syrup and hard candy of all varieties are equally appealing and adorably displayed. Folks looking for scented gel candles that burn for 100 hours need look no further than GGM. Made by a blind and deaf relative of the family, the candles are a perfect example of the specialized, custom wares Hawthorne has brought under one roof.

A separate charming building on the property houses fresh organic produce from Connecticut farmers.

"We plan to have it full of pumpkins in the fall, and winter greens at Christmas," Hawthorne said.
