4 Vehicles Reported Stolen, 2 Burglarized In Darien: Police

In virtually every case, the vehicles had been left unlocked, according to Darien police.

DARIEN, CT — Vehicles continue to be stolen or burglarized in Darien at an alarming rate, according to police, with four more thefts and two burglaries reported between Aug. 4 and Aug. 9.

In five of the six latest cases, the vehicles had been left unlocked, and in three of the four thefts, the keys also had been left inside the vehicles.

One of the reported vehicle thefts turned out to be an SUV that had been reported stolen out of Bloomfield but was abandoned in Darien, police said.

In that case, a 2020 Nissan Armada was found abandoned on Goodwives River Road on Aug. 4, and initially had been reported as a disabled vehicle. A check of the license plate revealed that the vehicle was a rental that had been stolen.

In a case from Aug. 5, a 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 was reported stolen from a home on Deerfield Road. The vehicle had been left unlocked, and the keys had been left inside. The vehicle was found later that day in East Hartford, and Darien detectives traveled there to process it for possible evidence.

On Aug. 9, two vehicles were reported stolen in Darien, both from homes on Maple Street, police said.

In the first case, an unlocked 2019 Chevrolet Traverse was stolen but recovered later that day on Cliff Street in Norwalk. The vehicle owner was able to track it to Norwalk by using a cell phone app, Darien police said. An iPad that had been in the vehicle was taken.

The second Maple Street case turned out to be a stolen Mercedes-Benz out of Norwalk that had been left at the Darien home.

A Darien officer discovered it because the driver's side door had been left ajar. Its keys were found inside, and the center console had been rummaged through. The vehicle was processed for possible evidence and returned to its owner.

Of the vehicle burglaries, the first one was reported on Aug. 5 on Old Kings Highway North. In that case, an unlocked 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser was broken into, and the storage compartments were rifled through. Nothing appears to have been taken.

The second reported vehicle burglary was reported on Aug. 6 at a home on Rings End Road. In that case, an unlocked 2019 Acura RDX was broken into and $10 in cash was reported missing.
