DARIEN, CT — A 19-year-old Darien woman was arrested on a narcotics warrant on July 16 in connection with a case stemming from early June in which police found nearly 138 grams of packaged marijuana in the suspect's possession.

Lindsey B. Bennett, of Locust Hill Road, was charged with possession of a controlled substance within 1,500 feet of a school; possession of a controlled substance; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The incident began at about 10:45 p.m. on June 6 when officers were called to Darien High School on a report of a group of people standing in the road yelling.

"Upon arrival officers observed 3 males and one female, the female was seen wearing a black backpack," said Darien police in a statement. "Upon seeing the officers, the group began to walk away from the area and onto an adjacent church property. An officer checking the area where the group was last seen found the black backpack, which had been observed on the female, on the property of the United Methodist Church. Inside the backpack was a large amount of a green, leafy substance consistent with marijuana and various associated paraphernalia (Substance would later test positive for the presence of THC)."

The four people were then spotted by another officer, who saw the group run across Middlesex Road and get into a parked Jeep Wrangler, and began to drive away.

"A traffic stop of the Jeep was conducted, and the occupants identified. The female seen wearing the backpack, identified as Lindsey Bennett, was in the vehicle. When asked about the backpack, Bennett initially denied ownership, but later admitted to owning it. Further, Bennett appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Due to her apparent intoxication, Bennett was released to a parent. The remaining occupants were turned over to a parent as well."

An inventory of the backpack's contents found several labeled plastic packages of suspected marijuana, which weighed a total of 137.72 grams. Also in the backpack were several smoking devices and a marijuana grinder.

Bennett surrendered to police on the 16th and was released on a promise to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Aug. 17.
