Darien Volleyball Rolls Over St. Joseph

Wave shooting for perfect season with three games to go

The Darien Boys Volleyball team traveled to Trumbull and defeated a much improved St. Joseph Cadet team in three sets Wednesday afternoon. The victory kept the Wave's perfect record intact, moved them to 14-0, and extended their regular season winning streak to 33 games.

Darien at St. Joseph Highlights

Darien will host Ridgefield this Saturday, May 15 at 10:00 a.m. Ridgefield is led by Head Coach Lidania Cibere. Coach Cibere's Tigers won the boys volleyball state championship for three consecutive years from 2014 to 2016. Darien ended Ridgefield's state championship hopes in five sets in the 2017 quarterfinals in one of the greatest volleyball games in Connecticut high school history. Given Darien's history with Ridgefield, Saturday's matchup will be every bit as contentious as a Darien/New Canaan game.

Ridgefield defeated Trumbull this past Thursday night in five sets. Ridgefield was the underdog going into the game with a record of 8-4 and Trumbull was favored with a record of 11-2. With the loss, Trumbull fell to 11-3 and Ridgefield moved to 9-5. One thing is for certain, Coach Cibere knows how to win volleyball games. Her team is much improved at this point in the season. The upset over Trumbull could mean trouble for Darien if it has boosted Ridgefield's confidence and has given them a little extra momentum. Fortunately, for Darien, Ridgefield may be worn out from having to play three games in three days. The Tigers played a five set slugfest against Trumbull Thursday night and then will play New Canaan Friday night. New Canaan is one of the top teams in Class M with a record of 10-2. Ridgefield then will have a short turnaround for the Saturday morning game against Darien -- the state's top ranked team.

The Blue Wave have three difficult games remaining. If they can run the table on the final three games they will be the first Darien boys volleyball team to go undefeated in regular season. As of the writing of this article, the boys volleyball team is the last undefeated team in any sport at DHS this spring season. It is hard to win a single game in any sport, so to win every regular season game is an outstanding accomplishment. An undefeated season would be another great achievement in Coach Laurie LaRusso's incredible career.
