Darien Writers Invited to Register for Online Summer Classes

Westport Writers Workshop, whose students are from Darien & surrounding towns, is offering a variety of online courses this summer.

DARIEN, CT—The Westport Writers Workshop invites experienced or aspiring writers to join their summer classes which are being held online.

If your mind is whirling with current events, you’re having a hard time focusing on writing, or you miss your writing group meet ups, join the Westport Writers Workshop for a prompt class where they will concentrate on escaping the world and finding joy through writing and discuss elements of craft.

The class is held online via Zoom and taught by Allison Dickens, a former Senior Editor at the Penguin and Random House Publishing Groups. She co-created the XYZ line of books for twenty-somethings while at Ballantine/Random House, and oversaw the Ballantine Reader's Circle program.

Dickens is also teaching From the Beginning. What makes a great opening line? How do you grab a reader from the first page? In this workshop we will look at what makes a great beginning examining classic and contemporary bestsellers known for their immediate hooks. Participants will have the opportunity to submit the first 5 pages of their current work for review and discussion.

Douglas Moser is teaching From Page to Stage, a playwriting class that will share techniques to make the most of the collaborative process. After a design demonstration, the class offers exercises to try with your work-in-progress. Writers will find new ways to express their needs and envision their work on a professional stage in this lively seminar. Moser has spent 30 years as a professional theatre director. His adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” won the Connecticut Critics’ Circle Award for its performance at the Westport Country Playhouse.
