(Stamford CT): They say that necessity is the mother of invention. So it was a hiking trip in the Grand Canyon that led Mike Dummeyer to invent a deck of playing cards that could be used for a myriad of games… Flex Deck… the perfect multi-tasking play thing.

“I was hiking in the Grand Canyon with my fiancé and needed to travel light. But the pack of traditional playing cards I brought was only good for the usual card games. Mid-trip I was struck with inspiration: why not change the face of the cards to adapt them for use in other games?” says Dummeyer the inventor.

Self-taught on a computer design program, he mocked up his first prototype and tested it with friends and in a local Stamford coffee shop, Lorca. The response was enthusiastic, so he worked with a local designer to enhance the final design.

“I wanted Flex Deck to be made in the USA, so I turned to the US Playing Card Company in Kentucky to make the best quality product,” he says. Each Flex Deck is the same size as standard playing cards though a miniature version is in the works.

Available now on Amazon and at local specialty toy stores, Flex Deck has taken off. Priced at only $9.99, Flex Deck has inspired users to invent dozens of new games.

“We have one user in Montana who even figured out a way to use Flex Deck to play soccer. And teachers are using Flex Deck to teach young kids about colors and counting. Lovers of Cardistry especially enjoy Flex Deck for their colorful card tricks. We’re especially inspired by the Flex Deck buyers who’ve invented their own games and have shared their ideas on our website.”

In this time of quarantining, Flex Decks offer a great chance for family entertainment and are a wonderful alternative to too much screen-time for Zoomed-out kids.

As Dummeyer found on his Grand Canyon hike, Flex Deck is especially popular with travelers conserving weight and space. “One of our biggest markets is folks in RVs,” says Dummeyer. “And Flex Deck is great for family car-trips.”
