Connecticut Weather: Up to a Foot of Snow Possible Wednesday

As we awoke this morning, the National Weather Service increased snow accumulation estimates significantly. Happy first day of spring!

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for all of Connecticut and snow accumulation estimates are significantly increasing for Wednesday's nor'easter snowstorm. When the storm winds down late Wednesday much of the state could be on the receiving end of up to a foot of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

In a couple of days we went from a near miss to a near blizzard when forecasting this storm. The worst of the snow is expected to be Wednesday afternoon and evening, though some snow and mixed precipitation is expected for the morning commute.

For Fairfield, New Haven and northern Middlesex counties, "Heavy mixed winter precipitation transitioning to heavy snow is expected. Total snow accumulations of 11 to 15 inches and light ice accumulations are expected."

For New London county and the coast of Middlesex county, "Heavy mixed winter precipitation transitioning to heavy snow is expected. Total snow accumulations of 7 to 10 inches, with localized amounts up to 13 inches, and light ice accumulations are expected."

For Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties, "Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 10 to 14 inches are expected." And for Litchfield County, "Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches, with localized amounts up to 15 inches...."

Winds are also expected to gust to 30 mph during the snowstorm. Mixed precipitation may begin after midnight and change to all snow by 9 a.m. in western parts of Connecticut and continue throughout the day and evening. Some thunder snow is possible too. Because temps will be near freezing, it will be interesting to see how much snow sticks on roads as opposed to grassy surfaces.
