Boat Business Booms In Essex
The boating business is flourishing at Boat Works in the town of Essex.
ESSEX, CT — In the eternal words of my grandmother, "sometimes, good comes out of bad," that is the case for some industries in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. Boating is one such business that has flourished as a result of Covid-19 travel restrictions and social distancing.
Last year, as spring approached, boat sales increased exponentially and according to Bob Jarrett, managing broker of Boat Works in Essex, it's happening again this year.
"I never thought I would ever say 'I can't keep up with the sales' but that's what is happening," says Jarrett thankfully. "We feel so fortunate, so many industries have been hit so hard by this pandemic. We in the boating business are surprised and appreciative. We've had our fair share of down years, as well, so we know how hard it is."

As Covid-19 restrictions stranded families and prohibited big traveling excursions, many turned to boating as an alternative way to spend summer vacation in 2020 and they are doing the same again in 2021. Boating is a perfect social distancing escape for families and Jarrett says there are a lot of new faces seeking to get in on the fun.
Located at the mouth of the Connecticut River, the tri-town area has always been a hot spot for those who love the water. Whether you choose sailing, small craft, fishing, or 40 to 80-foot diesel cruisers that are Jarrett's market, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Jarrett explains that the entire boating industry is experiencing a boom, which is resulting in a shortage of inventory.

"It is definitely a seller's market. More demand than supply," says Jarrett. "And a great time to command the best value if you are selling, because buyers are willing to pay."
He adds, "Builders are backlogged about two years on new orders of popular models."
With this boating boom, comes the additional increase in those looking for slips in the area. Jarrett says that slips are becoming a rare commodity and it is becoming increasingly hard to find them.
In the end, although the pandemic has been a devasting turn of events for our country and the world, there are some bright spots here and there, and some industries that are making the best of the bad situation.
