ESSEX, CT —Equipped with a passion for helping others and becoming an integral part of her native community, recent Valley Regional High School graduate and Ivoryton resident Ryce Libby has completed her six-month probationary training with the Essex Fire Department Engine 1 and is now an official, volunteer firefighter.

"It's awesome," said Libby, excited about her new endeavor. "Everyone in the Department has been very supportive and I have made a lot of really good friends."

Libby joined the Department in November and has been working on completing her Fire One class to become an interior firefighter. Her final test for that class is this Saturday.

"It hasn't felt like six months, it has gone by so fast," said Libby who is proud of herself, for her accomplishments. "This is a lot, and I am very excited."

In addition to her accomplishments, Libby now gets to adorn her fire helmet with the official Essex Fire Engine Company #1 shield, which is a huge honor.
