Farmington HS Honoring The Late Jack Phelan With Memorial Service

A memorial service has been slated for Jack Phelan, who was the athletic director at Farmington High School and former UHart hoop coach.

FARMINGTON, CT — A memorial service celebrating the life and legacy of Jack Phelan, the late Farmington High School athletic director and former University of Hartford men's basketball coach, has been scheduled for Aug. 20, one month after his death.

The service will a candlelight vigil on the Farmington High School football field, starting at 7:15 p.m. The rain date is slated for Aug. 21.

Phelan died on July 20, six days after his 66th birthday. Farmington school officials said the news of Phelan's passing came with "profound grief."

Before his stint at FHS, Phelan served as the men's hoop coach at UHart from 1981 to 1992. He also oversaw the transition of the program from NCAA Division II status to Division I.

He also coached at Niagara University, Saint Francis University and Fairfield University.

Phelan was a standout at Saint Francis after graduating from Northwest Catholic High School. He scored a home court record of 42 points in his senior season against Duquesne.

Phelan was chosen in the sixth round of the 1977 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors.
