Santander Bank Closing 4 Branches In Connecticut

Federal banking officials said this week that four Santander branches will be closing in Connecticut this summer.

FARMINGTON, CT — Spain-based Santander Bank is closing four of its 28 branches in Connecticut, according to federal authorities.

Santander made the declaration this week to the federal office of the Comptroller of Currency, an agency that charters, oversees and regulates banks in the U.S.

Records show that branches to be closed on Aug. 6 are:

  • Farmington
  • East Windsor
  • Plainville
  • Waterbury

The closing of the four branches is not an indication that a bunch more will follow, Santander officials said.

Santander, is based in Spain and surfaced in Connecticut a dozen years ago when the bank acquired Pennsylvania-based Sovereign Bank.

Other branches in Connecicut have closed over past few years. For example, one former Enfield Branch is now the Enfield Express, an extension of the adjacent town hall. Vernon's former branch is now an Enterprise Car Rental outlet.

According to a company history, on 15 May, 1857, Queen Isabella II of Spain signed a Royal Decree authorizing the incorporation of Banco Santander. The intent was to facilitate trade between the northern Spanish port of Santander and Latin America.
