Troop is working with Give2TheTroops to send care packages to deployed service members.

Submitted

On Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 9 and 10, Boy Scout Troop 125 in Granby stationed themselves outside local supermarkets Geissler’s and Stop & Shop to request donations of items that could be sent to men and women in the armed forces who are currently deployed overseas. The troop is working with the non-profit organization Give2TheTroops, whose mission is solely to send care packages to deployed troops. This organization is based in Rocky Hill and has been shipping packages to military troops since 2004.

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

This past spring, when the boys were planning out their next year of scouting activities, they felt it was only appropriate, that on the weekend preceding Veteran’s Day, they do something to show appreciation and support of our military men and women now stationed far from home.

The response from the Granby community was fantastic and 20 boxes (almost 40 cubic feet) of items were donated, based on lists of items requested by military personnel, including holiday decorations and cards, personal care items, snacks and entertainment items. In addition, over $1,000 of cash donations was received that will be used to purchase additional items and to pay the shipping costs of the items collected.

The Boy Scouts of Troop 125 would like to thank all who gave donations this past weekend, and to all those in the armed forces who have, and who continue to sacrifice so much to serve and protect our nation.
