Granby Obituary: Shirley Dickey, 83

Shirley McClain Dickey, 83, passed away peacefully at the McLean Skilled Nursing Care and Hospice on Saturday, April 21, 2018.

She was born in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Luther and Lois (Harlan) McClain who predeceased her. She was also predeceased by sister Beverly who died in infancy and sister Sharon who died at age 14.

Shirley attended Des Moines schools and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1953 and the Iowa Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in 1957. She was on the original nursing staff when McLean opened in the early 1970’s.

She retired from nursing in 1978 and became a Teacher Assistant at Granby’s Kelly Lane School for 18 years. She taught Church School for many years at the First Congregational Church in Granby, was the original circulation manager for the Granby Drummer and served on the Granby Adult Education committee at its inception.

She is survived by her loving husband Donald of Simsbury, son James, wife Kathleen, grandson Patric of Torrington, and son John, wife Tracy, grandson AJ and granddaughter Montannah of New Hartford. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

The family is very grateful for the loving care given to Shirley by McLean Rehabilitation, Skilled Nursing Care and Hospice.

Calling hours will be on Friday, April 27 from 5 - 7 pm followed by a memorial service at 7:00 PM at Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby. Interment in Granby Cemetery will be private.
