Submitted

Wednesday, October 23 State Rep. Bill Simanski (R-62) and State Senator Kevin Witkos (R-8) hosted an informational discussion on the Affordable Health Care Act (ACA) and Connecticut’s Healthcare Exchange.

Demian Fontanella the General Counsel of the Office of the Healthcare Advocate was on hand and gave a detailed presentation on the new law. He discussed some of the new requirements insurance companies face and ways that consumers can get the most out of their healthcare.  Mr. Fontanella helped to explain the new healthcare exchange and the opportunities for subsidies that are available to many families.

Lee Goodall, representing Access Health CT, Connecticut's health insurance marketplace, was there to describe the advantages of accessing their services and products offered by the exchange. Anyone can go onto their site and conduct an anonymous search to identify rates and health coverage available, for comparison shopping. Unlike the national ACA site, Access Health CT is fully operational and user friendly.

“I feel that this meeting was very helpful for the residents in explaining how the healthcare exchange and Affordable Health Care Act will work,” said Rep. Simanski. “The opportunity for people to ask and get answers to their most pressing questions about healthcare was important. The forum was also an opportunity to clear up many of the misconceptions about the ACA."

“This forum gave our community direct access to Connecticut’s healthcare experts,” said Senator Witkos. “By hearing these presentations and asking their own questions, attendees were able to get a better understanding of the Affordable Care Act’s impact in our state and the new resources made available by Access Health CT.”

The event was attended by many residents with questions about the new health care plans that are available and concerns about their current plans potentially becoming more expensive. These and many other questions were able to be answered by Messrs. Fontanella and Goodall.
