Top 5 Royalty Songs of All Time, Election Day in Granby and East Granby, Heminway Retires

Here are five things going on in the area this week.

Good morning, Granby and East Granby! Today is Monday, Nov. 4, 2013; there are 57 days left in the year.

Lorde’s “Royals” is tearing up the charts as we speak. So, it got me thinking, first, “What’s a nice 16-year-old New Zealand girl doing singing about Kansas City’s professional baseball team?”

Then, when my wife pointed out that I’m a moron, I thought, geez, what are the best songs ever that deal with royalty? Then my wife pointed out that I’m a moron again.

5. Duke of Earl (Gene Chandler, 1962) - Check out the link. This song is still amazing.

4. Candle in the Wind - Goodbye England’s Rose (Elton John, 1997) - Not a fan of this song, but it was a touching tribute to the fallen Princess Diana.

3. Two Princes (Spin Doctors, 1992) - If you were in college in the early 1990s, you owned Pocket Full of Kryptonite. This was the ubiquitous single off that album. I never want to hear it again.

2. Under Pressure (Queen with David Bowie, 1981) - Well, the song isn’t about royalty, but the band is named Queen, and this, in my opinion, is its best song. Sue me.

1. King of Rock (Run DMC, 1985). OK, this is a sentimental pick, but man the 9th grade me thought this was the coolest song ever. I will cop to always wondering who the sucker MCs were who needed to call DMC “sire.” Meh. This was my introduction to rap, and I’ve always loved it.

Here’s a look at what’s ahead this week:
