Tornado Warning Expires For Northern CT, Severe Storms Possible

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for all of northern Connecticut as strong storms have already knocked out power to thousands.

HARTFORD/TOLLAND/WINDHAM COUNTY — The good news is that the Tornado Warning has expired for northern Connecticut but a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for all of Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties until 9 p.m.

"The tornado threat has diminished and the Tornado Warning has been cancelled. However, damaging winds remain likely.... A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 900 PM EDT for northern Connecticut," according to the National Weather Service.

There have been no confirmed reports of a tornado touching down today, though there have been some photos and videos depicting rotation.

There have been numerous reports of trees and power lines down. There are 2,900 people without power including 550 in Enfield, 454 in Mansfield, and 1,240 in Vernon.

The National Weather Service says "Trees were downed in Mansfield from this severe thunderstorm at 6:04 PM."

Locations impacted include: Mansfield, Windham, Plainfield, Willimantic, Killingly, Brooklyn, Columbia, Canterbury, Ashford, Pomfret, Sterling, Chaplin, Hampton, Eastford and Scotland.

At 534 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Tolland, or near Vernon, moving east at 30 mph.

HAZARD...Tornado and half dollar size hail.

SOURCE...Radar indicated rotation.

IMPACT...Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is
likely.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

TAKE COVER NOW! Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.

Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.


A Tornado Warning is still in effect until 5:45 p.m. for northwestern Tolland County and northeastern Hartford County. The National Weather Service has also issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for parts of Windham, Tolland and Hartford counties until 6:15 p.m.

"At 512 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over Windsor Locks, or near Enfield, moving east at 20 mph. HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts and half dollar size hail. IMPACT...Expect wind damage to trees and power lines. Minor hail damage to vehicles is possible.
