GREENWICH, CT — Nearly 30 Greenwich High School students have been asked to quarantine for two weeks after a student at the school tested positive for the coronavirus, district officials said.

District spokesperson Jonathan Supranowitz confirmed 29 students at the school started the process Thursday and would remain in quarantine for 14 days. (To sign up for Greenwich breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

In a letter sent to families a day prior, Superintendent Toni Jones and Mary Keller, the district's head of nursing, said they were notified a student at the school had tested positive for the virus, also referred to as COVID-19, Wednesday.

The student who tested positive was part of the schools "Cardinals Cohort," one of two cohorts of students under the school's hybrid model. As a result, 15 students at the high school were placed in quarantine after "thorough contact tracing" was performed, they said.

"Also, we were notified about an additional positive case from a non-GHS student that exposed 14 of our students as a result of an outside activity," the letter reads.

Supranowitz said he was unable to say what the "outside activity" referenced in the letter was.

That second group of students, who were part of both the school's "Greenwich" and "Cardinal" cohorts, were also placed in quarantine.

"[Greenwich Public Schools] will remain vigilant in keeping our families informed as guided by our local health officials," the letter reads. "Thank you in advance for conducting the daily health checks to keep our community healthy and safe."

According to a tracker on the district website, a total of three students have tested positive for COVID-19 since the start of the school year in September. Since the tracker is updated every Friday, this week's new case is not reflected in that total.

According to Supranowitz, the district does not track the number of students, teachers and staff members asked to quarantine since the start of school.
