GREENWICH, CT — The Board of Selectmen unanimously appointed a new Deputy Police Chief on Thursday.

Kraig Gray, a 30-year veteran of the Greenwich Police Department, will be promoted from Captain to the Deputy Chief position following the retirement of Mark Marino. Marino's last day with the department is June 1.

GPD Chief James Heavey called it an "honor and privilege" to recommend Gray to the Board. Gray was chosen as an internal candidate which included an outside search.

Gray, a retired U.S. Army Reserve 1st Sergeant, has held several positions over the years with the GPD. He currently commands the Detective Division, and has also been the Patrol Commander and Public Information Officer. Heavey noted that Gray worked in Professional Standards, "so he has a vast knowledge and understanding of the workings of the GPD."

Gray has a bachelor's degree from the University of Conecticut in society and justice, and a master's degree from Marist College in public administration.

"Having known Capt. Gray for many years as a private citizen and as a state representative and as First Selectman, he has always been the same person," said First Selectman Fred Camillo. "He's always been very helpful and very communicative, and very well-liked. He's a hard worker who knows the town inside and out, and I look forward to working with him in his new position. He's a good choice and we're very excited to have him as the new deputy chief."

Along with his duties as Deputy Chief, Gray will now take over the town's Parking Services Department from Marino.

Selectperson Lauren Rabin, who is the chair of the Re-Imagine Greenwich Committee, said Parking Services is "vital" to the work the committee is trying to do.

"I'm very excited about your promotion and the opportunity to work with you more closely in the future," she told Gray.

Selectperson Jill Oberlander also said she's happy with the promotion.

"I am grateful that he has agreed to step forward into this additional leadership position. Our town will be very well served with him in this position," she said.

Following the unanimous vote, Gray spoke briefly and thanked Heavey and the Board for placing confidence in him.

A promotional ceremony for Gray and positions through the ranks will be held on June 14 at Police Headquarters.

Camillo thanked Marino for his years of service to the town. Marino came to Greenwich from the U.S. Army in 1983, and has served as a sergeant, lieutenant, captain, and deputy chief, the position he's held since 2012. Marino was also a member of the Special Response Unit, serving as commander since 2009.

June 1 will be proclaimed as Deputy Chief Mark Marino Day in the Town of Greenwich, Camillo said.
