GREENWICH, CT—The Greenwich Fire Department responded to a home on Dwight Lane in the Northwest part of town in the early morning hours on Tuesday after a fire alarm was activated and reports came in that the residents smelled wood burning.

While en route, fire officials received word that the house began to fill up with smoke. After arriving on the scene, a fire was located in a void space in the floor assembly, according to GFD Assistant Chief Brian Koczak.

Crews cut their way into the floor and ceiling assembly between the basement and first floor, and were able to extinguish the flames. Koczak said the fire was just contained in that area, covering roughly four bays worth of floor joints.

The GFD Fire Marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire. Eleven career units and several volunteer crews responded to the scene, including a number of tankers because the area does not feature fire hydrants.

The Northwest part of town has been a hot-button issue in Greenwich for a number of years now, as residents there have pleaded for a new fire station because of concerns over fire coverage and response times. The GFD recently concluded and accepted an outside fire study that made a number of recommendations on how to improve response times and fire services in town.

The study, which was conducted by Matrix Consulting Group, did not immediately recommend the need for a new Northwest station, but said the town should consider it in the future.
