Fourth Of July Fireworks Cancelled In Greenwich

The 2020 Fourth of July fireworks displays at Greenwich Point Park and Binney Park have been cancelled, according to town officials.

GREENWICH, CT — This year's Fourth of July fireworks displays at Greenwich Point Park and Binney Park have officially been cancelled as Greenwich continue to try to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus, town officials announced Friday. Both fireworks displays were originally scheduled to take place July 3.

During a press update Friday afternoon, First Selectman Fred Camillo expressed disappointment over not being able to salvage the popular annual summer events. (To sign up for Greenwich breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

"I am disappointed, as I am sure thousands of residents will be," Camillo said in a statement. "In discussions with leaders of the parks and recreation, police, fire and public works departments, it is evident that, given the sheer numbers of people who attend these annual events, we cannot ensure proper social distancing and the safety and health of residents and town employees for these two events.

Though there will be no fireworks held in July, Camillo said the town will continue to monitor the data related to the virus and social distancing patterns in hopes of possibly scheduling an alternative fireworks event in either late summer or early fall. The first selectman also noted nothing was concrete at the moment.

"We're thinking about it, and we'd love to do it, but...we don't know at this point," Camillo said. "They're certainly not going to be the July 4 fireworks if they're held in September, but we'll figure something out.
