How To Grill Safely This Summer: GFD
The Greenwich Fire Department is urging residents to be careful during grilling season.
GREENWICH, CT— With warmer weather here to stay, the Greenwich Fire Department is offering up some safe grilling tips for residents.
- Propane and charcoal grills should only be used outdoors
- Place your grill well away from your home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and over-hanging branches.
- Always open your gas grill lid before lighting it.
- Check your gas grill yearly, before lighting, for leaks from the hose or tank. If it has a leak and you can stop it, have it serviced by a professional. If you cannot stop the leak, call the fire department.
The GFD noted that nationwide, 61% of households own a gas grill, and that July is the peak month for grill fires. Over 10,000 house fires per year in the U.S. are started by grill fires. Almost 20,000 patients per year arrive at the Emergency Room due to grilling injuries.
