GREENWICH, CT — It's official. Gov. Ned Lamont has called for a special election to fill the 36th District Senate seat, which was vacated by Alex Kasser who resigned last month. The election will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 17.

The 36th Senate District covers all of Greenwich and portions of Stamford and New Canaan. Kasser, who was elected to her first term in 2018, suddenly announced her resignation on June 22, citing an ongoing divorce battle. Kasser's term runs through 2022.

Several candidates, who are all Greenwich residents, have stepped forward looking to run for the seat. On the GOP side, Leora Levy, State Rep. Harry Arora, and Representative Town Meeting member Ryan Fazio have thrown their hat into the ring. Fazio ran against Kasser in 2020 and lost a closely contested race.

According to the Greenwich Time, Greenwich Democrats have tentatively scheduled a nominating convention for July 6. The Time also reported that Republicans have scheduled a convention for July 10. Both are expected to be held via Zoom.
