GREENWICH, CT — A total of 45 students and staff members at Greenwich High School were asked to quarantine over the weekend after exposure to the coronavirus, according to district officials.

In a letter sent to families Sunday, Superintendent Toni Jones and Mary Keller, the district's head of nursing, said they were notified a teacher of an elective class who was last in school on Friday had tested positive for the virus due to exposure from a family member outside of school.

Following "thorough contact tracing," 25 students in both the school's Cardinals and Greenwich cohorts, as well as four teachers, were asked to quarantine for 14 days, officials said. They are expected to return to school during the second week of November depending on the date of close contact, the district said.

The district was also notified that 16 students were exposed to the virus during a "team sports competition" Friday, according to the letter. The competition was not associated with the district.

As a result, the 16 students will also remain in quarantine for two weeks, officials said.

"At this time, there is not a confirmed positive case [of the virus]," the letter reads. "If any of the 16 students should test positive, contact tracing would begin immediately and we would notify [families]."

Spokesperson Jonathan Supranowitz also noted the district is stressing to families the need to be diligent during weekends and after school.

The news comes days after the district reported two students at North Street School and a paraprofessional at New Lebanon School had tested positive for the virus, and two third-grade classes at North Street and the entire kindergarten and first grade at New Lebanon were asked to quarantine as a result.

According to a tracker on the district website, there are 10 current active cases of the virus within the district. This number includes students, staff and service providers, according to the tracker.

The tracker also indicates none of the current active cases were exposed to the virus at any of the district's schools; each case originated from either outside activities or family exposure.

Supranowitz said the tracker was last updated Friday at 8 a.m. and would likely be updated again Tuesday morning to reflect the latest information.
