Temple Sholom Continues Thanksgiving Tzedakah Tradition

GREENWICH, CT - On Thanksgiving morning, Temple Sholom families of all ages came together to deliver a holiday meal and a smile to residents at McKinney Terrace in Greenwich. Most of the volunteers were recruited via social media, prompted by a call-to-action Facebook post by Cantor Asa Fradkin.

“It began with an impromptu conversation about lending our efforts to better serving our community and to teaching our children that it is our responsibility to make society a place we are proud of,” said Fradkin. “The response was overwhelming and we had more than 10 families participate. They were so enthusiastic and excited to be a part of it.”

The meals, consisting of holiday favorites like turkey, mashed potatoes and green beans, were prepared, cooked and plated on Tuesday, November 22 by 8th through 12th graders as part of the temple’s ongoing commitment to tikkun olam (repairing the world). This Thanksgiving cooking program has become an annual tradition at Temple Sholom and supports the core value of giving back to those who are less fortunate.

“Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all we are thankful for,” said Temple Sholom President Ben Kriegler, who serves as a kitchen supervisor for the teens. “It provides a lead-by-example opportunity for me and a rewarding and fulfilling experience for all the participants who show their appreciation by volunteering.”
