38,000 CT Residents Lose Power As Severe Storms Roll Through

Multiple tornado and thunderstorm warnings were issued in Connecticut Sunday night as a powerful storm knocked down trees and power lines.

CONNECTICUT — More than 38,000 Connecticut residents are without power late Sunday as a fast-moving, powerful storm rolled through the state.

Two tornado warnings were issued for Fairfield County and have since expired. It will likely be known Monday whether a tornado touched down. A line of severe thunderstorms blitzed the state moving from west to east between 8 and 11 p.m. Sunday.

Towns reporting more than 1,000 power outages include: Bristol, Darien, Fairfield, Newtown, Norwalk, and Seymour. Dozens of towns are reporting outages between 500 and 1000.

Wind gusts in excess of 50 mph were reported in several parts of the state.

An initial tornado warning was issued for southern parts of Fairfield County until 9 p.m., and this was in the Greenwich and Interstate 95 corridor. That tornado warning expired at 9 p.m. Strong thunderstorms have persisted in this area.

The second tornado warning was issued for the Danbury area and central parts of Fairfield County and that expired as of 9:15 p.m.

Darien Police said, "Remain indoors and take all necessary precautions. Numerous reports of power outages, downed trees and wires have been coming into the police department."

Eversource said, "Strong wind gusts are bringing down tree limbs and branches, causing scattered outages across the state. Our crews are working to get the power back as quickly and safely as possible. Stay away from downed wires and report them to 9-1-1 immediately."
