Whitby School Announces 2021 Trustees Merit Scholarship Recipient

GREENWICH, CT — Whitby announced Friday that the 2021 Trustees Merit Scholarship is awarded to Silas Hoffman.

According to a news release, Silas was selected among a pool of applicants that differentiated themselves as academically strong students and exceptional leaders with a track record of involvement in extra-curricular activities.

"We are so happy to welcome Silas into Whitby’s 6th grade program for the 2021-2022 school year," Whitby Head of School Jack Creeden said in a news release. "He comes to us with a strong academic foundation, but what impressed me was his sense of curiosity, his positive attitude, and natural ability to relate to people, both peers and adults."

Silas is currently a fifth grade elementary student at Parkway School, which is located adjacent to Whitby in backcountry Greenwich. Attending Whitby has been Silas's dream for some time as his dad was a graduate, and he understands the value of a Whitby education.

The merit scholarship award allows Silas to join Whitby's middle school and prepare him both academically and social-emotionally for the secondary school of his choice when he graduates in 2024.

"When I visited Whitby, I immediately felt that the students and faculty would accept me for who I am and that the transition to a new school would be a positive experience," Silas said in a news release. "I like that Whitby lets you learn at your own pace and encourages you to explore and push yourself to excel."

The Whitby Trustees Merit Scholarship will continue to provide academically strong students the opportunity to become part of the Whitby Middle School program that is based on International Baccalaureate principles.
