You Can Have Fun and Games at Greenwich Library

Who says it can't be fun and games at the library? Greenwich Library is set to prove that it doesn't always have be serious at the venerable institution.

Next weekend Greenwich Library will unviel its new gaming collection.  The introductory collection will feature 15 games in multiple formats including Wii™, XBOX 360, Playstation® 3 and PC. This collection is geared toward families with ratings of E, E 10+ and Teen. Patrons will have the chance to try out the new games on from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, in the Teen Central area, located on the second floor of the library.
 
“Video games are now a mainstream form of entertainment for all ages and the medium of choice for the millennial generation,” said Library Director Carol Mahoney. “Libraries across the country have embraced gaming by offering both video game collections and gaming programs for children, youth, and seniors. Libraries see it as a way to engage people by providing programs that support literacy, team-building and intermixing media content for learning. Video activities require traditional text literacy in order to succeed, and people can have fun participating in a social activity at the same time.”
 
Games may be borrowed for one week and can be renewed for an additional week.  There is a limit of two games per Greenwich resident cardholder and fines of $1 per day will be assessed for overdue items.  Patrons can search and place reserves for games in the catalog.  
 
“Video games inspire the imagination, require the ability to read and understand complex instructions, and challenge us to collaborate and develop strategies to succeed,” said Mahoney.
 
Some of the titles in the introductory collection include Lego® Harry Potter, EA Sports NHL 11 and Rock Band 3, among others. Greenwich Library has offered numerous opportunities for gamers including a recent celebration of National Gaming Day and drop-in sessions of Guitar Hero.
