Fundraiser For Meals On Wheels, Who Really Delivered In Pandemic

GUILFORD, CT — In the early days of the pandemic, Meals on Wheels for the Guilford Interfaith Volunteers went above and beyond to make sure that anyone in need of a meal got one delivered.

Director Christi Burton told Patch at the time in mid-March that since the program doesn't get state funding it's not restricted to serving just the elderly home-bound, and so offered to feed "anyone who is at risk," and especially, those without family nearby to help them.

"Our program is flexible. How often we deliver meals, the cost, all of that we can work with, any issue," Burton said then. "We don't say no to anyone in need."

Meals on Wheels stepped up. Now, it's our turn to be there for them.

The 2nd annual Disc Golf Tournament to benefit Meals on Wheels is set for Oct. 17.

Disc golf is a sport where players throw a Frisbee-like disc to hit a target, played like golf with nine or 18 "holes."

The beginner/intermediate level tournament and clinic will be held at the Rick B. Maynard Disc Golf Course at Bittner Park, 1390 Durham Road.

First, there will be a clinic taught by Innova Champion Discs Ambassador Craig Smolin then the tournament with a shotgun-style start. The entry fee is $25 and includes one disc, score card, one round of golf and the clinic.

There will also be refreshments and raffles, and all proceeds from the fundraiser, produced in cooperation with Guilford Parks & Recreation, will benefit Meals on Wheels.
