Guilford Cares Has Delivered $17K Of Groceries

The program, run by the town, is a partnership with local grocers to deliver food to those at risk of the new coronavirus.

GUILFORD, CT — The Town of Guilford announced progress achieved in the Guilford Cares program, which is delivering groceries to the town's senior and immunodeficient residents, according to a press release from the town. The program is meant to protect those high-risk people from the new coronavirus.

The third full week of the program has finished, with an average of over 20 deliveries daily and 221 overall orders through the life of the program. It accounts for $17,000 of groceries purchased and delivered.

The town is working with Big-Y, Bishop’s Orchard, the Fresh Market, and The Marketplace for most of the deliveries.

As a part of the program, those at risk are having prescriptions picked up, and having clothes delivered at nursing homes.

Guilford Cares' over 70 volunteers are shopping and delivering, so far to 103 unique clients. "The response to this program has been overwhelmingly positive, from both the clients and the markets where they have shopped," the release says.

First Selectman Matt Hoey expressed his gratitude, saying "I am always amazed but never surprised by the willingness of our community to put others ahead of self. Guilford Cares represents the best of who we are and what we stand for. I am so proud of this group of volunteers and to be a member of this community."
