WETHERSFIELD, CT — Less than 20 minutes into Saturday's Class M field hockey final at Wethersfield High School, it appeared Guilford would achieve its goal of winning a second straight state title even before intermission. The high-scoring Indians tallied three goals in a 12 minute span to jump to a 3-0 advantage en route to what seemed to be an easy victory.

Not so fast. Seventh-seeded Daniel Hand scored with just under five minutes left in the opening half, then drew within one in the final minute of regulation play. The Tigers had three chances on penalty corners in the final four minutes, but were unable to convert as the top-seeded Indians held on for a 3-2 championship victory.

Maddie Epke had a hand in all three Guilford goals, scoring on a penalty stroke and assisting on scores by Hannah Tillier and Ava Bucci. Grace Hartmann and Amy Woods found the cage for the Tigers.
