Guilford's Own Receives "Best Delegate Award"
Good News, young Guilford Resident wins big at Model United Nations Conference, Boston

Guilford resident Marlah Hohlfelder (12) and partner Oliver Shulman (12) from Fairfield, students of Westfield Academy of Debate and Public Speaking, won big at the Middle School Model United Nations Conference at Northeastern University in Boston on November 22, 2014. Together Marlah and Oliver represented the country of Estonia in the UNICEF committee and worked to find a resolution for the difficult topic of Child Refugees. The students spent weeks preparing for the event submitting their Position Paper on week prior to the Conference date. Competing against other middle school delegates from across New England Marlah and Oliver won the Best Delegate Award.
“The Best Delegate Award goes to the delegates with the most demonstrated excellence in representation and performance in a single committee. Specifically in terms of:
- Excellent use of parliamentary procedure
- Thorough and detailed preparation of country position and topic
- Use of knowledge of UN actions on the issue (both historical and possible)
- Skill in negotiation and collaboration with other countries during moderated and unmoderated caucus
- Diplomatic and convincing public speaking”
