Project Lifesaver is the premier search and rescue program operated internationally by public safety agencies, including the Guilford Police and Fire departments, and is strategically designed for “at risk” individuals who are prone to the life-threatening behavior of wandering. The primary mission of Project Lifesaver is to provide timely response to save lives and reduce potential injury for adults and children with the propensity to wander due to a cognitive condition.
Police explained further that the Project Lifesaver transmitter is placed “either on the wrist like a watch or on the ankle. The decision on placement is up to the person wearing it. Each person has their own assigned number. The receiver is only activated when the caretaker or family member calls 911 to report their loved one missing. The device transmits typically up to 2 miles but with additional antennas, up to 5 miles. The transmitter will still emit a signal in up to 75ft of water. The batteries last between 30 to 90 days depending on type of battery ordered.‘’
