New Bear Sightings Reported in Guilford

Local officials urged residents to report sightings to the DEEP and offer tips on how to avoid having bears come onto your property.

"We have heard that there have been a few bear sightings in Guilford in the last few days! If you have a bear sighting that you wish to report, here is a link to the DEEP's black bear report form.

While on their site, be sure to check out their information on making your yard less attractive to bears, such as removing bird feeders in spring and summer months and securing all bee hives.

Please remember, bears have been in Guilford for years, and there is no need to worry.

Black bears are typically shy creatures, but they won't pass up a tasty hummingbird feeder or bee hive! Taking these steps will help avoid a conflict with these beautiful creatures!"

Guilford Animal Control also wrote the following:

DEEP is aware of the bears in Guilford. Here is the link to follow to report your bear sighting. The immediate assistance hotline for DEEP is 1-860-424-3333.

*So far the bears have enjoyed a few beehives and bird feeders. If you have a hive, there are some easy DIY fences to put around them with a small electrical charge.

*If you have bird feeders, take them down. If you must have them, keep them a good distance away from your house so as not to have an unwanted visitor on your back deck.

*Make sure your BBQs are cleaned out and the drip containers are clean, otherwise you might have an unexpected guest.

*Trash containers and recycle bins... you guessed it, must be put away until trash day or sealed tightly if outdoors... unless.... you want a surprise companion.

Nature is amazing... but sometimes best seen from a distance.
